I had Daniel as a professor for American Sign Language for several years. Taking a class with him at Portland Community College in 2018 was my first official foray into learning the language, and I couldn’t have asked for a better one. Learning from a deaf professor, especially one as approachable and communicative as Daniel, was invaluable. He managed to conduct a class almost entirely in ASL to a class with students ranging from zero background with sign language or deaf culture to some students already being able to have basic communication. This is a very hard balance to strike, making sure the students with less experience didn’t feel left behind, and those with more experience didn’t feel under stimulated. Regardless, he managed this balance with ease and a sense of humor that made class fun and exciting to attend. I enjoyed learning not only vocabulary from Daniel, though there was much of that, but the insight into deaf culture and community was fascinating and one of my favorite parts of class. My ASL skyrocketed under his instruction, helping me seek further education in college. I still seek out Daniel for tutoring sessions now, though I also consider him a friend.

Daniel is a colleague of mine, having worked together for almost 5 years, he is a team player and a leader. Daniel leads the group discussion on technology needs at Portland Community College making him our best "go-to" person when it comes to any technology issues. When approached with an issue or situation, Daniel responds with listening "eye", patience and provides solutions.

Mr. Harnish is great. The class is full immersion which makes it hard but very effective. If you miss a class it is a little tough to catch back up since it is ASL and there is no talking. However, he is really good at repeatedly going over the material so you can get caught up. You must participate. Without it you will not learn anything.

Daniel Harnish was my high school ASL teacher. He was one of those teachers who you could tell genuinely cared about his students. Even now, years later, I know if I needed something I could reach out. He was a great teacher and make class fun. Mr. Harnish is super funny. He has a great sense of humor, positive attitude, and good outlook on life. He is also very patient. He had to be patient with us a lot as we learned ASL. I appreciate that Daniel is a family man. He loves his wife and kids. He is kind, compassionate, and a good friend.
